Full house enjoys enchanting evening

6:30pm Saturday November 13th Geoffrey Lancaster gave a recital on piano forte in a special fund raiser for the music dept. of Canowindra High School. The recital was accompanied by a 3 course meal preceded by free wine tasting.

Geoffrey  performed a program of Haydn with a wonderful series of historical commentaries on the time and atmosphere in which the music was originally performed. Geoffrey made much of the fact the music was originally written to be performed to an audience of the size we had that evening (40-50).

Between 1999 - 2007, Geoffrey Lancaster was Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of La Cetra Barockorchestra Basel. He has appeared as conductor or soloist with all of Symphony Australia orchestras and The Australian Chamber Orchestra. Geoffrey has been frequent guest Director and forte pianist with the Tasmanian Symphony Chamber Players since 1987.

In 1996, Prof Lancaster was Associate Professor at the Royal College of Music, London, and from 1999-2007 was visiting Professor of forte piano at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Switzerland. Since 2000 he has been based in Canberra, and from 2002 has been Professor of Music at Australian National University.

Geoffrey's 32 CDs have won many awards including a Gramaphone award for Best Recording, the Aria Best Classical recording. In 2006 Geoffrey Lancaster was named Australian of the Year for The A.C.T., and was awarded the Order of Australia for service to music and music education.

It was an absolutely wonderful evening - so much so that Geoffrey has been inspired to return in 2011 to give another performance and do some mentoring work for a couple days beforehand with local young people.

Over $2300 was raised for the music dept. of Canowindra High School.
