On Saturday August 16th. at 6:30 pm
Cecelia & Rocky Rochelli, Micky Young,
Sean McKenzie and Rory Brown bought a "Mood
Swing" to taste Canowindra
It was an eclectic mix of jazz, rock & blues. These
versatile players perform in a
diverse
number of settings. Ceceilia Rochelli - Vocals -Is playing
Peter Allen’s mother, Marion, in the upcoming Orange Theatre
Company production of ‘Boy From Oz’. But on this night she was the
soulful jazz artist leaving us spellbound. She moved from soft
love songs that brought a hush over the venue, to bashing it out
with dynamic numbers that demonstrated the enormous versatility of
her wonderful voice.
Micky Young has toured and recordedplaying soul,
blues and
jazz on his saxophone with the likes of Lisa Hunt, Rod
Jefferys and Ian Moss at venues all over Australia. Brass with
class summed up Micky the solos were breathe taking, he made the
most of the time honoured tradition where the respectful vocalist
shows off the players in the band (I reckon Micky is a bit of a
show off too –
but boy does he
have something to show off!) Sean McKenzie -
keyboards -Sean has played & recorded with Don Burrows,
“Dragon” & the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra;
Epizo Bangoura & Afro Moses from West Africa; Paul
Jackson, Tommy Campbell & Jeff Andrews from U.S.A; Waldo Fabian
from Chile; "Lava" & "Yamatake Carnival" project from Japan -
just to name a few, he was always there when rhythm was needed but
his cameo pieces of jazz piano just blew us all away
– intricate snippets of
lilting tunes dancing across the tapestry of the
songs.
The rhythm section Rocky Rochelli - Drums & Percussion -
& Rory Brown – laid a solid platform for the others to
weave a wonderful scene of improvised colour - you can really see
why they all play together. Rory plays Electric &
Upright Bass -Has played live - or recorded with groups such
as Tommee and the Neighbourhood (Indonesia/Australia); Chris
Kayana Gudu (Zimbabwae/Australia); Dereb Desalegn & Lion of
Judah (Ethiopia/Australia); Tigramuna (Chile/Australia); Arabesk
(Bulgaria/USA/Australia); Kris Wanders Unit; Ray Beadle and the
Vipers; Darren Jack Band; Hermitude,at various festivals, theatres
and clubs. Rocky Probably the Central West most versatile
drummer and percussionist. Has played many different styles with
wife Ceceilia through - jazz- swing -blues -rock - and musical
stage shows, most recently led the percussion section in Jimmie
Sloggett’s 8 piece ensemble recorded live at taste Canowindra.
