Folk@Canowindra
Guest Artists last month was
Nerida Cuddy
Nerida did a great job at last months session the day was a
lovely warm afternoon and the crowd drifted in out of doors -
thanks to the Harply's for supporting Neriada. Do want to flag a
change to our program for what
would be our September Folk @ Canowindra - because of the centenary
of the railway celebrations in Canowindra over the last weekend of
September and the first weekend of October, and also because we
will have a huge tent on the long weekend, Folk @ Canowindra will
be held in a tent for 200 on taste's lawn on Sunday October 3rd
from 4pm til late it's a holiday weekend so you can sleep in
Monday. What a great line up of artists w've had over the
past few months -Genni Wilby (Kane) Jon Wilby & Gavan Wickes,
Jason & Cloe Roweth, Blue the shearer and Nerida the standard
is so consistently high. Local Rob Pearce will be the feature
artist on the long weekend folk@ Canowindra bill - but there
will be more than one guest artist and we haven't as yet confirmed
the 2nd. and the session will go later through and after dinner.
Look at the site after Monday the 13th. September and we should
have the other guest artist.
Just a few snippets from Rob's bio: "Music has been my hobby
since I was about 14 at boarding school in the early 60s.
Acoustic guitar playing with similar minded mates in the
music room was considered a legitimate way to escape compulsory
evening study time. Then came the Beatles and the explosion
of 4 piece bands. Overnight, there were plenty of would be lead
guitarists & drummers, but rhythm guitarists were few and bass
players were zero. This presented my opening to join the biggest
band at the school "the Pulse" as the bass player. The Pulse
was considered "musically versatile" because it not only liked to
play rock & roll, but also the rock/folk music (Dylan, Simon
& Garfunkel, etc). My "real job" was to become an
accountant and this took me to Papua New Guinea for a few years.
In PNG, I had the good fortune to team up with a few musos to
play John Denver, Bobby Gentry, Neil Young type songs at a Uni folk
festival in Lae. This, in turn, led to playing bass for the local
rock & roll band "Salaboad" (for Sax, Organ, Lead, Bass and
Drums) which had the Saturday night Dance slot at the Melanesian
Hotel and an 8 piece jazz group without a name that had a Wednesday
night slot at a local restaurant. In 1977 I "went finish"
from PNG and, musically had a few "lost" years. Inevitably, in
1985, that changed because the Pulse decided to have a reunion "20
years on" at the recording studio of the 5th member electronics
head. That was a great fun day and resulted in one booking
for one 40th birthday party. Then came the formation of "Syd
Harbour & the Ferries". Syd & the boys comprised 3
from the original Pulse players plus 2 others. So Syd & the
boys had much fun strutting our stuff over the next several years,
virtually until I moved to Canowindra in 1996. In Canowindra,
it didn't take long to hear about a local singer/songwriter by the
name of John Wythes. I heard John & his band at a ball at the
then acoustically impossible Canowindra community hall and noted
that they didn't have a bass
player. In 2001, an opportunity came and I had the pleasure of
joining the John Wythes band. Over the next few years I felt
very privileged to spend time on stage with John. I also watched
him struggle to cope with the ever increasing onset of Parkinson's
disease and the limitation it placed his beloved musical
creativity. The John Wythes band came to an end with John's
premature death in 2005, aged 53. The legacy of his 100 plus
songs lives on from his several CDs, the gatherings of the "Noisy
Mothers", (a band which now comprises (give or take a few) John's
widow, Julie, his son, Jo and me), and individual performances.
So I have not had a solo music career as such, just the
occasional playing without me muso mates all gathered round".
Folk @ Canowindra has become so popular that taste is offering
dinner after the scheduled performance and the featured artists do
brackets to accompany dinner. Please ring and book if you'd like to
share dinner with us after the club, there is a wide selection of
menu choices with light meals from as little as $12 to full gourmet
meals. Remember Open Mike & Folk Club at taste is free from 4pm
with no cover charge for the entertainment.
For the past year and a half, a growing group of music and
poetry lovers have been enjoying an array of performers monthly at
a folk gathering in Canowindra. Founded by Nerida Cuddy, a
local singer-songwriter of 20 years experience; the open mike
session has been a source of inspiration and friendship for many in
the region. Performers come from all walks of life; with a
huge range of ages and varying levels of experience. Each month we
present a feature artist, surrounded by a series of short
acts. As always, visitors are VERY welcome to the session -
either to come and listen, or even to contribute a poem or a song.
Entry is free, and families are welcome. It is a great
opportunity to while away Sunday afternoon enjoying good coffee,
food and wine; along with music and verse. Any enquiries, for
a slot on the bill contact Nerida Cuddy 0429 048 603.
